Split

Splitwise is great for keeping a running tab with roommates, but the free version has two gaps:

• You can only add a few expenses a day (around four right now).
• Itemizing is all or nothing. You can put someone on an item or leave them off, but you can't say "I had one of the three slices."

Split fills both gaps. You do the item math here, then add one expense to Splitwise with the exact amount each person owes. Paste Split's summary into the note so everyone can see where the numbers came from. You can also combine several receipts into that one expense to stay under the daily limit.

1. Add people. Add everyone splitting the bill (if the list is closed, tap Edit people). Tap Save as group so next time it's one tap.
2. Add items. Tap Add item, then type a name and price. Press Enter to jump to the next item.
3. Pick who had what. Each item starts with everyone on it. Tap a name to take them off, or tap again to put them back. Everyone and Only are shortcuts.
4. Add tax, tip and discount as printed. Tip also has percentage buttons. If you type the receipt total, Split will tell you when your numbers don't match it.
5. Check and save. The bar at the bottom (or the right side on a computer) shows what each person owes. Tap Queue expense to save it and start the next receipt.

One receipt: open Preview summary and copy it. In Splitwise, add an expense for the total, choose to split by exact amounts, and type in each person's amount. Paste the summary into the notes.

Several receipts: queue each one, open the Queue tab, tick the ones you want, and tap Export selected. Add a single Splitwise expense for the grand total using the combined amounts, and paste the combined summary.

Exported receipts move to History, so you won't count them twice.

Someone had more than others. Tap Custom weights. The numbers are shares, not dollars: 1 and 1 is half each, 2 and 1 is two thirds and one third, and 0 leaves someone out. Handy for a pitcher where one person had two glasses and another had one.

A coupon on one person's item. Add it as its own item with a minus price, like -3.00, and select only that person.

A discount on the whole bill. Put it in Discount. It's shared in proportion to what each person ordered, the same way tax and tip are.

Instead of typing every item, you can have an AI chat read the receipt for you.

1. Take a photo of the receipt.
2. Open Claude or any AI chat that accepts photos. Attach the photo and paste in this prompt:

3. Copy the reply. On the Receipt tab, tap Import JSON, paste it, and tap Load items.
4. Check the prices against the paper receipt, then pick who had what as usual.

Loading a receipt replaces whatever is on screen, so queue the current one first.

• Red messages mean something needs fixing, like an item nobody is on. Tap the message to jump to it. Queue stays off until it's fixed.
• Pennies. Totals always add up to the receipt exactly. When a cent can't be split evenly, Split hands it out fairly, so nobody is ever more than a cent off.
• Undo. Deleting an item, clearing a receipt, or removing a queued expense can be undone from the pop up at the bottom.
• Themes. Tap Theme at the top to change the colors. Some themes have light and dark versions.
• Your data stays in this browser on this device. To use your groups somewhere else, tap Copy groups for another device, then Paste groups on the other one.
